Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God’s wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (AMP)
The most common question I get from mothers is, “How should I pray for my family?” Today is Mother’s Day, and I want to take this week to show moms how to pray God’s Word.
This teaching applies to everyone, of course, but I’m going to focus especially on moms. Often, they have a special sense of what’s going on in their home—which family member is struggling, or which child had a hard day. A mom’s radar is always on.
Many of the moms I talk to have concerns about their children’s behaviour or future. But the thing about kids is that you can’t control their free will. Now, you can put wise limits on them when they’re young. But throughout their childhood and teen years, your main job is to equip them in the things of God. Then as they grow older, they must find their own way.
It starts with your relationship with God. When you’re confident in the Word, you won’t have to freak out when those teenage years hit. Instead, you can continue praying the Word over them with confidence. As your kids decide what they’re going to do or who they’re going to date and marry, keep speaking God’s promises of wisdom, strength and guidance over them.
Instead of micromanaging or fussing over those you love, you can rest in God’s promises. Trust that He will lead them by name and show them the way they should go.
Tomorrow, I’ll show you the first of seven powerful prayers of a mother. They might surprise you!
