Angels: In Awe Of God

Leon FontaineDevoted

Don’t tolerate people who try to run your life, ordering you to bow and scrape, insisting that you join their obsession with angels and that you seek out visions….They’re completely out of touch with the source of life, Christ.
Colossians 2:18–19 (MSG)

Yesterday we began a new series of devotionals on the topic of angels. We began by highlighting the fact that angels are never to detract us from our relationship with Jesus.

Paul echoes this sentiment in today’s verse, warning us not to join others’ obsession with angels or visions. We are to keep our focus on the source: Jesus!

Are we supposed to be in awe of angels? No, angels are in awe of God, and so should we be!

When Ezekiel’s eyes were opened to see God’s throne room, the angels he described were pretty awesome. Isaiah saw a similar vision where the angels surrounding God’s throne were calling to one another, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3). These angels were enraptured with God. That’s the attitude we need to have!

Nowhere in the Bible do we find that we are to pursue angels, and we need to realize that the majority of the time they work in the background, unseen by us. Personally, I’ve never seen or spoken to an angel, but I believe they are at work in my life every day. We don’t need to seek out encounters with them to benefit from what they do for us.

Angels worship and are in awe of God. They don’t try to exalt themselves above him. As we study angels, let’s reignite our awe for God!
