You are more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. Psalm 76:4 (NKJV)
God does everything with excellence. It’s His nature. Psalms 76:4 says He is “glorious and excellent,” and He has given us the desire to grow, excel and become more like Him.
Many have a problem with excellence because they have entangled it with acceptance. Talking about excellence is a sore point for them because they feel as if they can never measure up.
The truth is that we are all imperfect. We have good intentions, but something happens on the path between intentions and reality. Even the apostle Paul felt the same way, saying “I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway” (Romans 7:19–20, The Message).
Paul was frustrated that his actions didn’t measure up to his intentions, but he discovered the truth. There is just no way that we can ever be perfect enough to earn a relationship with God…but God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. That’s why He sent Jesus to make things right. Once we are in a relationship with Him, He empowers us to live right and follow His ways because that’s the best way to live, but He accepts us unconditionally.
With this in mind, you can put aside any condemnation you feel for being imperfect and, in all you do, aim high for excellence.
Don’t worry if you aren’t perfect—no one expects you to be. You are loved. You are accepted. You’re free to do the very best you can, to live all-out for God, knowing that you can and always will keep growing and getting better with Him.
