Two Keys: Relationship And Truth

If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31–32 (NKJV)

Does today’s verse mean that those of us who know the truth about Jesus are automatically free in every area of life?

Actually, when you read both verses together, it first talks about being a disciple before it talks about the truth setting you free. A disciple is someone who has a relationship with Jesus Christ and is a disciplined follower of His truths. Those two words are key: relationship and truth. To be truly free, you need both.

Learning the truth from God’s Word is vital if you want to walk in freedom—there’s no doubt about it. But God’s Word also helps you to build a relationship with God. To build a relationship with someone, you need to get to know them better, right? Well, when you study the Bible, you find out more about God, learn more about who He is.

How else can you build your relationship with God?

If you wanted to build a friendship with someone, you would probably also make an effort to spend more time with them, do things with them, involve them in your everyday life and talk with them on a more regular basis. It’s no different with God. He wants to spend time with you and He wants you to communicate with Him throughout your day.

This week, take at least one step every day toward building your relationship with God. And as you go about your day, talk to Him and stay open to His guidance. Remember, He wants to lead you to make wise choices because He wants the best for you.
