Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:11 (NKJV)
If someone passed away from a terminal illness and you had a power that could bring them back to life. That would be great, but unless you could also cure them, it wouldn’t matter how many times you resuscitated them. Their disease would kill them again.
On the other hand, if you could cure their illness, but could not revive them, that wouldn’t do much good either. A healed corpse is still dead.
It’s the same with us. It wasn’t enough for Jesus to deal with our sin (spiritual disease). We also needed Him to bring us back to life spiritually, or else we would continue living “dead” lives. When you accepted Christ, He accomplished both.
1. Jesus took your sin and dealt with it at the cross. All the sins you’ve committed in the past and all you will commit in the future are forgiven. We still face consequences here on Earth for our actions, but your record with God has been wiped clean. The spiritual disease is cured.
2. Jesus also gave you new life. If all He did was forgive you, you would still be spiritually dead. Yet when He defeated the enemy and rose again, you rose with Him (Romans 6:8), and you now have His resurrection life flowing in you! This life empowers you to make great decisions, live morally and walk in the miraculous.
Without Christ, we were like the walking dead. Now because of Him, we have His abundant life and power within us. He’s living His life through you. You are cured—or dead to sin—and made alive in Christ (Romans 6:11)!
