Sinning After Accepting Jesus

He purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins. Ephesians 1:7 (NLT)

If accepting Christ erases our sinful past, what happens if we sin after accepting Him?

People often struggle with this concept. Some think that God only forgives the sins we commit before we came to Christ, not the sins we commit as believers. But think about it this way. How many of those sins were committed before Jesus died? None of them! In other words, He paid for them all in advance—whether they took place before we came to Christ or after. Through Jesus’ obedience and sacrifice, God made a way for you to walk in full forgiveness—and obedience—with Holy Spirit guiding you on the inside.

So, when you accepted Jesus into your heart, the entire penalty for all of your sin was accepted as paid in full—past, present and future.

There are still earthly consequences when we sin, even after accepting Christ. For example, if you choose to rob a bank, the bank and the judge may not forgive you! But when Jesus died for all of our sins 2,000 years ago, He paid the price in full for every single time we would miss the mark—before we come to Him, and after too. He makes no differentiation. He wipes our slate completely clean from start to finish when we accept Him.

If you’re in Christ, there is no condemnation for you (Romans 8:8). Colossians 1:13-14 reiterates that God rescued you and transferred you into His Kingdom through Jesus, who forgave your sins. In fact, in receiving this complete acceptance, along with the strength that Holy Spirit within you provides, you have the power to overcome every temptation—today and every day.
