When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. John 16:13 (NLT)
Growing up, I somehow picked up the belief that Holy Spirit was the biggest nag on earth. I know my parents taught me differently, but somehow, I came to assume that Holy Spirit’s job was to point out all my flaws.
During my prayer time, I thought that He was nagging me about every little thing I was doing wrong. As a result, I stopped enjoying my devotion time. Actually, I started to avoid it.
Everything changed when I discovered that Holy Spirit’s job isn’t to condemn believers but to remind us of our right standing with God. I found out that God “has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12, NLT). He says, “I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds” (Hebrews 10:17, NLT).
I realized that if God forgets our sins, it doesn’t make sense that Holy Spirit would remember every mistake so He could nail us repeatedly with guilt. God and Holy Spirit don’t have two different opinions. Holy Spirit’s job is to lead you into the truth of who God is and who you are in Christ.
Constant reminders of the wrong you’ve done aren’t coming from Holy Spirit; He isn’t condemning you. It could be the devil, but more likely your own heart is making you feel guilty. Regardless, it’s not Holy Spirit.
Don’t be hesitant to spend time with Holy Spirit. He’s not going to bombard you with guilt. His presence is full of joy and love, not condemnation. Spending time with Holy Spirit should always pick you up, not tear you down.
