God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.
Hebrews 1:1–2 (NKJV)
Because of what Jesus accomplished for us, believers have the ability hear from God directly.
In Hebrews 1:1–2, it says that God spoke through prophets in various ways in the past. He even spoke through a donkey one time, if you read Numbers 22, but now He speaks to us primarily through His Word and His Spirit.
Some think God isn’t speaking to
them unless they have some type of
spectacular experience. Others think
that they need to seek out someone
who specializes in hearing from God. But hearing from God is a much more normal, natural occurrence than what many think. Often His leading shows up as a subtle, internal sense or gut feeling.
I’m not saying that God never speaks to us through others. Of course He does. One way He does this is through preaching. Other people can also speak into your life—sometimes they might sense that God wants them to tell you something, or they may share a word of encouragement at just the right time. However, God doesn’t want us to rely on this kind of leading to determine the direction for our lives.
When someone else wants to share something with you that they feel is from God, be discerning. Remember that if it’s from God, you’ll know. Because you’ve accepted Christ, God communicates with you directly. Tune in and become more aware of the fact that He is guiding you through His Word and by His Spirit, from within you.
