And He said to them, Be careful what you are hearing. The measure [of thought and study] you give [to the truth you hear] will be the measure [of virtue and knowledge] that comes back to you—and more [besides] will be given to you who hear. Mark 4:24 (AMPC)
I remember watching an old show where a husband was reading a newspaper while his wife tried talking to him. He kept saying, “Uh-huh… uh-huh….” The wife could tell he wasn’t paying attention. Suddenly, he smelled something burning and realized she had lit his paper on fire!
Some of us are like that husband and treat Holy Spirit’s attempts to talk to us the same way. We read the Word or listen to Biblical teaching and think, “Yep, got it. I know that already.” But we don’t benefit from reading Scripture that way. After all, notice that Jesus didn’t say it was how many times you’ve heard a truth that helps you. He said it’s the “measure of thought and study” we give to the truth that plants it in our hearts. And the measure we choose to give it is the same measure it will come back to us!
Maybe you’re thinking, “I thought God had already given me everything.” He has, and it’s all given to you in His Word. Your job is to plant that Word into your heart where it can begin to grow and produce fruit.
That means taking the time to roll God’s way of thinking around in your mind. Spend time contemplating what He says and how you can apply it to your life. That helps sow it into the soil of your heart. From there, you’ll begin to reap the fruits of consistent meditation and confession in your life.
