WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A FATHER?

Leon FontaineDevoted

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; for the Lord upholds him with His hand. Psalm 37:23–24 (NKJV)

Today is Father’s Day, and I want to ask: What does fatherhood mean you? Is it providing your kids with a nice house, a good school and a car when they turn sixteen? To me, that’s being their banker, not their father.

Being a father is about pouring thousands of hours into your relationship with your kids. It’s about taking time to get to know them, teach them and show them how to live by example. Maybe you didn’t have the best father figure growing up, but you can be the one who breaks the fatherless cycle.

It starts with being a good man. When you purpose in your heart to be the man God created you to be, you allow Holy Spirit to work in you. He is attracted to movement. That’s why God blesses the work of your hands (Deuteronomy 28:12) and guides your steps. If you’re not working and moving, there’s nothing to guide.

Decide to work at developing the characteristics you want to have as a man and a father. I’m not saying you have to become something you’re not; I’m saying it takes effort to retrain your beliefs and attitudes. But the results are rewarding. So, grab a good teaching book or listen to a podcast on fatherhood. Get into God’s Word and ask Holy Spirit to teach you how to be the man no one else taught you to be.

As you work with Him and allow Him to direct your steps, you’ll give your children the best foundation for an incredible life.
