HANG ON TO THAT WHEEL!

A small rudder on a huge ship in the hands of a skilled captain sets a course in the face of the strongest winds. A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it! James 3:4–5 (MSG)

Do you know what really ticks Satan off? It’s when a servant of God knows how to control their tongue. The enemy understands just how powerful our words are. That’s why in good times and bad, it’s crucial that we actively manage what’s coming out of our mouths.

Today’s verses remind me of old pictures and films about sailors. When the sea would turn rough, the helmsman would literally tie himself to the ship wheel with rope. Why?

Because in the middle of a bad storm, a huge wave could break over the bow and wash him right out! But if he tied himself to the wheel, it didn’t matter how powerful the waves were—he was still anchored in place and able to keep the ship on course.

In the same way, when storms blow in our lives, we need to tie ourselves to the wheel and steer. What do we steer with? Our words.

So, when storms hit, take control of your tongue. Don’t let it flap out of control because it’s the rudder of your life. Always think about what you’re saying, especially when sickness, financial hardship or any other difficult situation pushes against you.

Today’s scripture says what we speak “may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything.” So, when you’re tempted to speak words of doubt and hopelessness, work to speak God’s truths and promises instead. You’ll be amazed at where it takes you!
