Just Sit With Jesus

My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her. Luke 10:41–42 (NLT)

Christianity is all about relationship. Imagine if I said to my wife, “I don’t really want to do the work to get to know you. Just tell me what to do and what not to do and we’ll be fine.” That’s not a relationship! Relationships are all about getting to know each other.

The same is true with God. He doesn’t want a robot that He can tell to do this and do that. He wants you to know Him, personally. As you do, something beautiful begins to take place in your life.

In Luke 10, Jesus was in the home of Mary and Martha. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet while Martha ran around looking after the food and serving her guests. This made Martha frustrated, and she asked Jesus to scold Mary, but Jesus wasn’t upset. Mary had chosen well.

Martha was so consumed with what needed to be done that she missed a wonderful opportunity to spend time with Jesus. Life will try to keep you focused and busy. It’s tempting to be worried and upset about many things as we go about each day. But when we are overly concerned with doing everything just right, we miss the most precious thing on the planet—relationships. And the first relationship we neglect is often the one we have with Jesus. Don’t let this happen to you!

You’ll always have a list of things to do that seems more pressing than sitting down with your Bible or devotional. But those things will still be there in half an hour. Be like Mary and just sit with Jesus.
