Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Romans 6:6–7 (NKJV)
When someone is crucified, they die, right? Well, today’s verses say that your old nature was crucified with Jesus.
Before you gave your life to Christ, you had the nature of sin within you because Adam sold out the human race to Satan. But the moment you gave your life to Christ, that old nature, which was ruled by sin, was done away with. You became a member of God’s family. Just as a lion cub has the same nature as his daddy lion, you have the nature of God. Since God is no slave to sin, neither are you!
Every time you’re tempted to do wrong, you have the power to overcome, but you need to believe it! What you don’t believe is of no benefit to you whatsoever. Hebrews 4:2–3 says that the Israelites who escaped Egypt were promised a prosperous land, but that promise didn’t benefit them one bit because it wasn’t mixed with faith. They didn’t believe that they could receive it.
To benefit from the fact that you’re a new creation who has the power to overcome temptation, you need to believe it!
You have to recognize that you’re a new creation and then read the Bible to find out about who you are in Christ. As you begin to believe it and put it into practice, you’ll finally let go of your old ways and begin to experience true freedom.
