Change Your Autopilot

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)

Yesterday we began a series talking about your potential. And the first, most important thing to get right on this journey toward fulfilling your potential is your heart beliefs.

You see, your heart is like autopilot; it determines where your life goes.

When you dial in a set of coordinates on a jet’s autopilot, it is designed to fly to that destination. Let’s say you programmed it to go to Tokyo but then you change your mind and decide to go to San Francisco instead. I’m not sure this is possible, but let’s pretend you grab the controls and with all your strength you manage to get it turned toward San Francisco. Before long, you’re going to get tired. And as soon as you loosen your grip, that plane is going to head straight for Tokyo again.

It is like that in our lives. You can try here and there to better your marriage, but if you believe in your heart that it’s going to fail, you’ll soon give up and it’ll deteriorate. You need to get hold of your autopilot—your heart beliefs about yourself, marriage and relationships—and get it pointed in the direction of a great marriage!

As today’s verse from Proverbs says, out of your heart flows the boundaries, the autopilot coordinates, of your life.

So, if you want real, lasting change, make it heart change. If you want to walk out all of the potential God has placed within you, get God’s thoughts and beliefs into your heart by studying His Word. You’ll start to love where your life is going.
