A Lack Of Purpose Is A Crisis

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Psalm 138:8 (ESV)

A few years ago, I read a book written for people who are looking for significance at mid-life. These people are wondering if what they have done so far really matters, and are questioning what they want to do with the rest of their lives.

Many people who hit this mid-life crisis stage of life do crazy things, believers included. Some ruin their marriages with an affair. Others quit their job and set out on a quest to find themselves. They feel lost when hit with the reality that their lives lack purpose.

What is interesting is that younger generations are hitting this stage much more quickly. In fact, many teens start out feeling disillusioned about the hunt for success. Young and old, it seems that everyone is asking, What is my purpose?

Meanwhile, God has an exciting purpose for each of us. He has a specific, individual purpose for you and also a general purpose that you share with every believer. And, as our verse says today, God wants to fulfill those purposes in your life.

What kind of purpose does God have for you? We’re going to discuss this over the next few days, but first you need to know that His purposes for your life are always good. Jeremiah 29:11 says God’s plans are for your good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope (NLT).

God’s plans and purposes for you aren’t just good; they’re amazing. Jesus came so you could  have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows) (John 10:10, AMP), so don’t hesitate to discover the exciting, purpose-filled life God has for you!
