Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26 (NKJV)
Over the past few days we have been discussing how we can train ourselves to hear from Holy Spirit. We covered the importance of spending time in God’s Word, developing a relationship with Holy Spirit and being obedient to the direction we receive from Him. We will discuss our fourth point today:
Pray in the Spirit daily.
For some who did not grow up with the concept of praying in the Spirit, it can be difficult to understand. A respected businessman once asked me cautiously, “Leon, do you pray in the Spirit?”
I responded, “Not in the way that you think,” as I watched him relax. “Have you heard how Tibetan monks chant certain words and some use words to calm the mind in yoga? Well, Christians have a special language as well.”
Praying in the Spirit is not as strange as some think. It’s simply a special way to speak with God that bypasses the mind. Your spirit communicates directly with Holy Spirit. Anyone can learn to use this special language after being filled with Holy Spirit.
According to 1 Corinthians 14:2, you speak mysteries to God when you pray in the Spirit. When you don’t know what to say (because the problem is a mystery to you), pray in the Spirit and Holy Spirit will direct your words to the exact problem. Do it daily. Don’t wait for the right feeling or mood. Simply find a private place and practice using this great gift Holy Spirit has given you.
