Delight yourself in the Lord, And He will give you the desires and petitions of your heart. Psalm 37:4 (AMP)
Did you ever have a desire that you knew you shouldn’t but you just couldn’t get your mind off it? It might have been as harmless as wanting a doughnut or as catastrophic as thinking about having an affair.
Psalm 37:4 (AMP) says that God wants to give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart. This verse can be a bit confusing. God can’t possibly want to give us all of our desires, can He?
Desires aren’t all bad but how we choose to fulfill them can damage us.
Although there are exceptions, the problem usually doesn’t lie with trying to stop the desire. Instead, problems arise when we make poor choices in how we choose to fulfill our desires.
Instead of thinking that all desires are bad, determine how you can meet needs in a healthy way that won’t damage yourself or others. If you have a desire you struggle to control, acknowledge your areas of weakness. We all have them, so share your weaknesses with trusted friends. It will help you to stay accountable.
You have the power to overcome. God’s Word is alive. When it gets into your heart and mind, it empowers you supernaturally to overcome a lack of control. It feeds your spirit and increases your faith. You have the power and the Bible helps you to believe it.
