…but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Romans 12:2 (NLT)
When I worked in emergency rescue, I was starting an IV for a woman scheduled for surgery when she started to panic, saying “I’m going to die!” I reassured her that she was only having routine surgery but it didn’t help. Suddenly, alarms and bells started going off. Her heart was going into a death rhythm.
Doctors and nurses flooded in and brought her back but when her surgeon arrived and I described her mental state, he said “Take her off my schedule. I won’t touch her.”
You see, she had a deep belief in her heart and this surgeon knew it. Smart surgeons won’t touch someone who believes they are going to die because they recognize the power of our beliefs.
How do you recognize beliefs that hold you back? Take an honest look at your life and determine where you consistently struggle. Then change how you think.
Thinking is just asking a question and answering it. Sometimes we give the wrong answer to the question we are asking. It’s a problem if your answer to “How can I get out of debt?” is “I never will.” Other times, we ask the wrong questions. “What’s wrong with me?” has no good answer, so replace it with something better, like “Who does God say I am?”
What questions do you ask yourself? And how do you answer those questions? Recognize destructive thinking that holds you back and replace it with God’s thoughts on the subject. God’s beliefs always lead to success.
