When Independence Is Detrimental

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NKJV)

There’s just no way we can be the kind of people we need to be without God’s power at work in us.

You can try all you want to be the perfect spouse, parent and friend. You can work your hardest to help those who are hurting. However, without a reliance on Holy Spirit’s power in you, you can only depend on your own limited strength and ability and you will have times of frustration, failure and possible burn out. No matter how talented or good we are, we all need to rely on God’s grace.

God’s power and ability is yours to help you with every issue and to empower you to be His hands and feet in the lives of others. Don’t fall for the lie that you have to deal with your bad habits and wrong behaviour before you can go to God for help, and don’t assume that God only works through people who “have it all together.”

Jesus said that His yolk is easy and His burden is light (Matthew 11:30). It’s like He’s saying, “I’ve given you my ability and I’ve qualified you to be in right standing with God. You can do anything the Bible says you can do and can rise up out of any mess you get into because my ability is yours! You don’t have access to my strength and ability just when you’re doing everything right. Actually, you need my power in order to do right, and it’s with you always.”

Keep your eyes on Christ for the strength you need!
