The Key to Walking in God’s Strength

That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.

Ephesians 3:16 (NKJV)

When we’re dealing with problems, it’s easy to get side-tracked by trying to find a quick fix. We get caught up with trying to find an instant cure, a miracle product, the perfect spiritual key, the right prayer line, a get-rich-quick solution or an expert who promises the answer in three simple steps.

In our search for instant relief, we forget something vital. We forget that the key to walking in God’s promises lies with making sure our inner selves are being renewed every day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

We gradually learn to walk in the strength, power and promises of God by being renewed in His love, and reading and meditating on His Word every day.

When Paul prayed for the Ephesians in our verse today, he prayed for this inner strength. He also described how we gain access to it: by getting rooted in Jesus’ love (v. 17), and by continually seeking to understand “what is the width and length and depth and height” of this love that “passes knowledge” (vv. 18-19).

We live in a world of instant gratification, but walking in God’s promises is a process. I’m not saying that we can’t experience instantaneous healing. Of course we can! But we need to remember that the key doesn’t lie with seeking after these blessings.

Seek God first—taking the time to read His Word and meditate on how much He loves you—and then all these things are added to you (Matthew 6:33), and “Your roots will grow down into God’s love and

keep you strong” (Ephesians 3:17, NLT).
