Speak What You Want

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith Ephesians 3:16–17 (KJV)

When things go wrong, we want to talk about it. We refer to this as “venting,” but we have to realize that our words hold weight. If all we talk about are problems, we’re just going to create more of the same.

I’m not saying that we need to shut out our feelings. It’s okay to admit when we’re frustrated, angry or anxious. In fact, this can be very freeing, but it’s also important to then turn our focus toward solutions. We need to speak about where we want to head next and what we want to happen. And, as believers, claiming what God has promised us holds great power.

If you are struggling to overcome an addiction, for example, you could claim 1 Corinthians 10:13 and Romans 6:17–18. Claiming these promises could sound something like this: “Father, thank you for setting me free from this. And thank you that when I am tempted, you always provide a way out!”

If whatever you’re facing makes you feel anxious, claiming 2 Timothy 1:7 is a great idea. Say something like, “Thank you, Father, that you haven’t given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, discipline and self-control.”

Whatever you’re facing, know that God has given you the power to overcome it. Today’s verse promises you strength in your inner being, and the verses that follow say that you have the power to grasp just how deep and wide Christ’s love is for you. That promise applies to anything you could face in this life, because God’s love will take you through!
