It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. John 6:63 (NKJV)
Words are not just for communication.
In Genesis 1, God spoke the world into existence. He said, “Let there be light,” and there was light (v. 3). Over and over, “God said,” and things came into being—sky, vegetation, sun, moon, stars, living creatures, and finally, mankind.
When Jesus walked the planet, He also used words for more than communication. He spoke to calm the wind and waves. He spoke to heal bodies. He spoke to cast out demons. His words hold power.
In the same way, the words you and I speak hold power. Often we speak without giving our words much thought, but the words that are spoken by a human being carry weight—especially when we speak God’s Word.
Today’s verse says that God’s Word is Spirit and life! And 1 Peter 1:23 also speaks of the life found in God’s Word: “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” In other words, when we speak God’s Word out loud, claiming His promises, the seeds we plant are imperishable. Those seeds grow; they produce fruit, and they guide our lives.
