Your Worth, According To God

Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! …who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. Psalm 103:1,4-5 (NKJV)

Over the last few days we’ve been talking about self-worth. We’ve established that God wants us to love ourselves. He wants us to respect ourselves and realize how precious we are to him.

Unfortunately, sometimes we try to get our self-worth from the wrong places, which causes us to have low self-worth. For example, sometimes we might measure our worth by our appearance. We may compare ourselves to others who are taller, shorter, bigger, smaller, younger, or older…and feel like we come up short.

When it comes to your appearance, here’s a good motto to live by: Make the best of it and accept the rest of it! There’s nothing wrong with wanting to work at making the best of what you have, but don’t get overly focused on looks. After all, your appearance doesn’t determine your worth.

We all have aspects of our appearance that we’d like to change. The reality is that we often focus on these so-called flaws too much and we think they are the first thing others notice about us. Meanwhile, people don’t nitpick our appearance, generally speaking. They’re often too concerned with their own appearance to notice anyone else’s!

Make the best of what you have and then put your focus on who God made you to be! You are unique and special. As Philippians 4 teaches, focus on what’s good and remember that you are precious to God and to others just because you’re you!
