Take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with…worldly worries and cares pertaining to [the business of] this life. Luke 21:34 (AMPC)
Do you ever feel over committed? If you feel like you have so much to do that there’s no time left for the things you enjoy, you’re not alone.
Today’s verse warns against letting yourself become overburdened and weighed down by worldly worries. You see, when we overcommit, it’s often because we have unrealistic expectations of ourselves.
It’s impossible to please everyone. Your boss would probably love it if you spent more time on your work. Meanwhile, your kids would love it if you quit your job and spent more time with them. Your friends would love to spend more time with you, but so would your parents.
The trouble is, you probably feel like you can never win. If you spend more time at work, you feel guilty about not being at home. If you take a day off to be with your family, you feel guilty about not being at work. You can’t live your life bouncing back and forth between everyone’s expectations of you or you’ll just end up miserable. Before you burn yourself out, take an inventory on how you spend your time to determine if you are really spending it on what matters to you.
Don’t allow guilt to run your life. God doesn’t expect you to be all things to all people. That’s his job! It’s okay to place boundaries on others regarding how much time, energy and resources you’re willing to give. In fact, that’s how healthy relationships work.
