We’ve been on a series of devotionals discussing a few common misconceptions about angels. Today let’s discuss what the Bible says about their purpose. The first verse I’d like to mention is Isaiah 47:4. In it, God is referred to as the “Lord of hosts,” which is also translated to “God-of-the-Angel-Armies” in the Message Bible. In other words, angels are God’s forces, and we are told they are innumerable (Hebrews 12:22). Angels are here to serve God. And according to our verse today, angels have been commissioned by God for a very specific task. God commanded …

Don’t tolerate people who try to run your life, ordering you to bow and scrape, insisting that you join their obsession with angels and that you seek out visions….They’re completely out of touch with the source of life, Christ. Colossians 2:18–19 (MSG) Yesterday we began a new series of devotionals on the topic of angels. We began by highlighting the fact that angels are never to detract us from our relationship with Jesus. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. Psalm 63:6–7 (NKJV) Biblical meditation is so important for our Christian lives, and King David gives us several great examples of how to do it in the Book of Psalms. Just look at the detailed picture he painted in his meditation time in Psalm 63. Every night David pictured God sheltering him, lifting him up and helping him win. He viewed himself like a young hawk or eagle being carefully sheltered under protective wings. David said he would follow God like a young bird follows closely behind its mother. He pictured the powerful right …
