EMBRACING CHANGE

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)

Change is at the heart of becoming Spirit Contemporary, yet many people resist the idea of change.

Some stick to their old ways because changing feels wrong and strange. But that “strange feeling” is often misinterpreted. They assume that Holy Spirit is warning them not to change, but really, they’re being led by feelings, which are fickle.

I faced this problem when our church began to make changes in how we conducted our services. For example, when we started inviting people to raise their hands and pray in their seats rather than come up to the altar to give their lives to Christ, some of our church members became incredibly upset.

A few approached me with tears in their eyes to tell me that they just didn’t feel good about the changes that were taking place. They wanted to stick to what they knew, even though it wasn’t working. What they were familiar with was wrapped so tightly with their faith in Jesus that they felt throwing one out meant tossing out them both.

At first, this bothered me. But deep down I knew that I had to get my truth from the Word rather than my experiences or popular opinion. I couldn’t find any examples in the Bible of people coming to an altar to begin a relationship with Jesus, so this gave me tremendous peace.

You see, things that make you feel uncomfortable aren’t necessarily wrong. As Holy Spirit helps you to understand God’s Word, you’ll learn to discern between the negotiables and the non-negotiables.
